Hamilton Island, long recognised as one of Australia’s premier sailing destinations and a regular host of major regattas, will enter a new ownership chapter following an announcement made by Blackstone at the end of December 2025.
For decades, Hamilton Island has been closely linked to Australia’s sailing calendar, hosting internationally recognised events including Hamilton Island Race Week and attracting offshore racers, cruising yachts, and superyachts to its Whitsundays base. With reliable trade winds, deep water courses, and a fully serviced marina, the island has built a reputation as one of the country’s most important regatta and boating hubs.
At the end of December 2025, Blackstone confirmed that real estate funds managed by the global investment firm had entered into an agreement to acquire Hamilton Island from the Oatley family. At the time of the announcement the transaction remains subject to customary regulatory approvals.
Hamilton Island sits in the heart of the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef and spans more than 2,800 acres across two islands, with approximately 70 percent of the land remaining undeveloped. The destination includes five hotels, more than 20 restaurants and bars, 20 retail outlets, a championship 18 hole golf course on nearby Dent Island, a full service marina, and a commercial airport. Hamilton Island is also a major employer in the Whitsundays, supporting a substantial on island community alongside a wide network of regional suppliers and partners.
Chris Heady, Chairman of Asia Pacific and Head of Real Estate Asia at Blackstone, said the acquisition reflects the firm’s focus on long term investment in hospitality and leisure assets across the Asia Pacific region.

The Oatley family welcomed the agreement, acknowledging Hamilton Island’s place in Australian tourism and sailing culture. Under the family’s stewardship, the island has undergone extensive redevelopment while maintaining its identity as Australia’s leading tropical sailing and resort destination.
Blackstone’s Australian portfolio includes major hospitality investments such as Crown Resorts, alongside significant infrastructure assets across the region. The acquisition of Hamilton Island strengthens Blackstone’s position in premium leisure destinations, while ensuring continuity for an island that remains closely tied to Australian boating and regatta heritage.
