Glenn Ashby joins DS Automobiles SailGP Team France for Rio

Glenn Ashby is set to join the DS Automobiles SailGP Team France as wing trimmer from the Rio Sail Grand Prix, replacing Leigh McMillan as he recovers from a shoulder injury sustained following the Auckland incident.
The absence of McMillan is a major blow for the French team mid-season. In response, they have moved quickly to secure one of the most experienced sailors in the sport.
Ashby arrives with an outstanding pedigree. A 17-time world champion and Olympic medallist, he is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished sailors of his generation. Known for operating at the highest level of performance, he has also reached speeds of up to 222 km/h aboard the futuristic land yacht Horonku.
Already active within SailGP in recent events, Ashby is fully up to speed with the demands of the league. His familiarity with the French set-up — including previous work with K-Challenge in 2024 — is expected to accelerate his integration.

Philippe Presti, Team Manager – DS Automobiles SailGP Team France:
“It’s a big challenge for the team to be without Leigh. We wanted someone with the same level of experience and expertise, and Glenn was the obvious choice. We’ve known each other for years, he knows the team well, and we’re confident he will have an immediate impact.”

“I’m ready to contribute from day one”
Ashby steps in with a clear focus: integrate quickly and deliver performance.

“I’m very happy to be joining the DS Automobiles SailGP Team France in these particular circumstances. Leigh McMillan was my Olympic training partner for the Tornado Catamaran and is a close friend and my first thoughts are with him for a full recovery from his shoulder surgery. The team has had a very strong start to the season, and I’m coming in with the goal of integrating quickly, bringing my experience, and contributing to the team’s performance from Rio onwards.”

A seamless transition

Ashby’s arrival also reflects a strong personal connection with McMillan, with the two sharing a close friendship. McMillan underwent shoulder surgery following the Auckland incident and is expected to be sidelined for several months. He remains closely involved with the team during his recovery.
