Victron Energy has expanded its Orion XS DC-DC charger series with a 12V to 12V model rated at 70A, packing extra charging punch while retaining the compact dimensions of the Orion XS range for marine and RV dual-battery systems.
Like other Orion XS chargers, the 70A version includes engine shutdown detection built in, with no need for an external sensor, and is compatible with smart alternators. A four-stage charging algorithm handles the charging process, and multiple units can be run in parallel without restriction.
The charger delivers up to 98.5% charging efficiency, and it holds its full rated output even in temperatures as high as 40°C. It works with GX devices for DVCC compatibility and connects via VE.Direct, and Victron notes it’s the most compact high-power DC-DC charger in its class.
Its primary role is charging the service battery from the engine while protecting the start battery. Because it draws a steady, consistent load, the charger works well with modern Euro 5 and Euro 6 alternators, helping ensure the service battery receives the charge it needs.
Users can also configure the charger to suit their installation. Input current can be capped to stop the alternator from being overloaded, and charging voltage can be dialled in for lithium, AGM, gel, or other battery types. The charger also automatically detects when the engine is running, and it will shut itself down if the alternator stops producing power.
With an IP65 rating, the charger is protected against dust ingress and water splashes. An aluminium circuit board inside helps dissipate heat while contributing to the charger’s compact design.
