Maritimo Boating Destinations – San Francisco USA

San Francisco Bay offers one of the most compelling cruising experiences on the American Pacific coast, combining spectacular scenery, vibrant waterfront cities, sheltered moorings, historic islands and the quieter natural beauty of its northern reaches.

Few cruising grounds pack as much variety into such a compact stretch of water as San Francisco Bay. One moment you’re easing past the Golden Gate Bridge as it emerges through morning mist, the next you’re tied up for lunch overlooking the waterfront at Sausalito, and by evening you’re swinging at anchor near Angel Island watching the city lights scatter across the water. For owners taking a Maritimo through these waters, that kind of range in a single day’s cruising is hard to beat.

The bay itself is best approached as a handful of distinct cruising areas rather than one body of water. The central bay delivers the postcard scenery most people associate with San Francisco, Marin County’s shoreline offers a string of appealing stops, and further north, San Pablo Bay shifts the mood entirely, trading skyscrapers for wetlands and open horizons.

San Francisco itself is the obvious starting point, with views across to Alcatraz, the financial district and the bridge itself. The Small Craft Harbor at the Marina offers guest berths, availability and vessel size permitting, putting the city’s restaurants and galleries within easy reach. Early morning is the time to cruise the waterfront, when the light softens and the shipping traffic is still finding its rhythm.

Across the water, Sausalito trades the city’s energy for something more relaxed and distinctly nautical. Its hillside homes, waterfront restaurants and galleries make it a natural lunch stop or overnight destination, with Schoonmaker Point Marina and Clipper Yacht Harbor (the latter taking vessels up to 80 feet) both worth considering. Tiburon, nearby, offers a similarly refined village atmosphere with views across to Angel Island and the East Bay, though bookings are worth confirming ahead of summer weekends when berths get tight.

Angel Island stands out as one of the bay’s genuine highlights. Just minutes from a major city, it still manages to feel like a proper escape. Ayala Cove has day-use slips and overnight mooring buoys, though it pays to check current arrangements before arrival, and the walking trails ashore wind through woodland to old military sites and lookout points with sweeping views across the bay.

Alcatraz is unmissable but better admired from the water than visited by yacht, while Treasure Island and Yerba Buena Island offer a different angle on the skyline for those willing to sort shore access separately.

The real change of scenery comes once you push north past the Richmond and San Rafael bridges into San Pablo Bay. Here the water opens into marshland, low hills and working waterfronts, with Point San Pablo Yacht Harbor in Richmond a handy base for exploring the quieter northern reaches. Suitably equipped yachts can push further still, up the Petaluma River, though the string of fixed, draw and swing bridges (some needing advance notice for opening) means careful chart work and tide planning are essential before committing to the trip inland.
