NZ Antique & Classic Boat Show 2025: A Celebration of Timeless Craftsmanship

A quarter-century of boating history

Since its inception in 1999, the NZ Antique & Classic Boat Show has grown from a small gathering of 35 home-built clinkers and runabouts into a must-attend event attracting around 130 boats each year. Co-founder and organiser Pete Rainey has watched the show evolve into a beloved fixture for classic boat enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.

“There’s now a huge range of entries,” Rainey says. “From a classic Italian motorboat once owned by Jackie Onassis to original Hamilton jets, sculpted cedar kayaks, and beautifully restored runabouts. Lately, with the increased cost of buying a new boat, more people are turning their attention to lovely old boats that may just need a tidy-up.”

A showcase of unique vessels

One of the key attractions of the event is the sheer variety of boats on display. Whether it’s a century-old wooden dinghy, a retro fibreglass speedboat, or an elegantly handcrafted kayak, each vessel has a story to tell. The show offers visitors a rare opportunity to see these classic designs up close and appreciate the craftsmanship that has stood the test of time.

Last year, the NZ Antique & Classic Boat Show gained international recognition when US-based web forum WoodyBoater named it the “most unique boat show on the planet.” Acclaimed marine photographer Steve Lapkin, who has attended multiple shows, provided images that accompanied the glowing tribute.

“It’s official, the world has spoken,” wrote WoodyBoater founder Matt Smith. “This show exhibits the uniqueness of what is possible in boat design. I love it.”

Introducing the Boating NZ Retro Boat Award

In recognition of the growing interest in classic boats, 2025 sees the introduction of a brand-new prize: the Boating NZ Retro Boat Award. Judges will be on the lookout for New Zealand’s finest original survivor runabout or trailer sailer. The winner will not only take home the Boating NZ Retro Boat Trophy but will also be featured in a three-page spread in Boating NZ magazine—a fantastic opportunity to showcase a boat’s history and enduring charm.

A weekend of action and tradition

The show isn’t just about admiring boats on display. Throughout the weekend, Lake Rotoiti will come alive with a range of on-water activities, including vintage boat races that provide a spectacular sight for visitors.

The highlight of the weekend is the Jens Hansen Trophy, awarded to a boat that stands out not just for its good looks, but also for its historical significance, construction quality, and unique story. Judging takes place on Saturday, with the prestigious awards ceremony held that evening at the Alpine Lodge.
