Clean Below? Good to Go. is once again bringing New Zealand’s boating community a vital seminar on marine pest biosecurity, following the success of the 2024 webinar. That previous session, delivered by Alice, Marine Biosecurity Specialist at Northland Regional Council, offered an in-depth look at marine pests threatening New Zealand waters, how they spread, and the critical role everyone plays in protecting native ecosystems and industries. Building on that foundation, the 2025 seminar promises fresh insights and practical guidance for detecting and managing marine pests in local waters.

Don’t miss this live webinar, scheduled for Tuesday 24 June from 10am to 11am. It will provide a focused update on identifying key marine pests commonly found in marinas, ports, marine farms, and natural coastal environments. The session is designed to help boaters, fishers, divers, and coastal managers recognise and respond to these pests before they cause significant harm.

The 25 June 2025 webinar will cover a range of marine pests of particular concern, including the Asian Paddle Crab, Australian Droplet Tunicate, Clavelina species, Clubbed Tunicate, Exotic Caulerpa seaweed, Japanese Mantis Shrimp, Mediterranean Fanworm, and Asian Kelp (Undaria). Each pest will be described with practical identification tips, making it easier to spot these invasive species during routine activities.

Participants will also receive expert guidance on how and when to report sightings, along with advice on what steps to take if a pest is found. The webinar will explain how pests hitchhike via biofouling on boat hulls, fishing gear, and equipment, as well as by fragmented pieces transported by tides or human activity. Understanding these pathways is crucial to preventing further spread and protecting New Zealand’s unique marine environments.

Additionally, the seminar offers an opportunity to engage directly with biosecurity experts from the Top of the North and Top of the South Marine Biosecurity Partnerships. Attendees can ask questions about ongoing work programmes and the latest biosecurity measures in place.

This webinar is free to attend and essential for anyone involved with New Zealand’s marine environment. It highlights how early detection and community vigilance are key to managing marine pests effectively. With limited government resources, the involvement of the public remains one of the best defences against invasive species. Register now to be part of this important conversation and help safeguard New Zealand’s waters for future generations.
