After a night of phone alerts, red warnings, and heavy rain sweeping through Northland, the Bay of Islands has woken to calm conditions.
As of this morning, the Bay of Islands Sailing Week weather has stabilised, with no rain falling across Paihia or the inner Bay. The systems that disrupted the evening have moved east, delivering a clean reset for Bay of Islands Sailing Week.
Bay of Islands Sailing Week weather turns race-friendly
Today’s Bay of Islands Sailing Week weather outlook is about as straightforward as sailors could hope for. Westerly winds are expected to settle around 16 knots, with gusts building into the low 20s.
It is a sustained, workable breeze, rewarding good trim and decision making rather than survival sailing. Pressure is expected to remain consistent across the course through the racing window.
Dry skies replace overnight rain
Cloud cover will linger early, but skies are forecast to lift from mid-morning. By early afternoon, sunshine is expected to dominate, bringing a noticeable rise in UV levels once the cloud clears.
According to PredictWind, no rain is forecast today, with dry conditions holding into the evening.
Severe weather warnings lifted for Northland
All severe weather warnings previously issued for Northland and the Coromandel have now been lifted by MetService. The only active warnings remaining are for the Chatham Islands, where strong winds and rain are forecast as the system continues east.
For the Bay of Islands fleet, it is a welcome reset after a disruptive night. Racing is scheduled to begin at 10.30am, with Boating New Zealand on site throughout the day, providing live coverage as Bay of Islands Sailing Week gets properly underway.
