Yamaha Marine New Zealand has expanded its Helm Master EX system in New Zealand with the release of a new wireless control option, giving skippers full low-speed manoeuvring control from anywhere onboard.
Rather than being tied to the helm, the wireless controller allows the boat to be driven while the skipper moves to the side deck, cockpit, or bow. For short-handed crews, or anyone regularly docking in tight marinas, that shift is beyond convenient! It changes how boats are handled at low speed.
Designed for single-handed control
At the centre of the system is a compact, wearable control fob that delivers full joystick-style control for docking, repositioning, and station keeping. Crucially, it allows genuine single-handed operation, freeing one hand for lines or fenders while maintaining precise control of thrust and direction.
The controller also functions as a portable Helm Master EX display, showing live depth, speed, and heading data. That means skippers can monitor key information while away from the helm, whether holding position over structure or easing into a berth.
Full Helm Master functionality, untethered
The wireless controller integrates directly with existing Helm Master EX features, including SetPoint position-holding modes such as FishPoint, StayPoint, and DriftPoint. Fine adjustments can be made directly from the fob, making it particularly useful for fishing, anchoring, and holding station near docks or bridges.
Joystick Hold is also included, allowing the boat to continue moving at a set low speed without constant input. For no-wake zones or canal transits, it effectively acts as low-speed cruise control.
Beyond propulsion, the controller can operate the windlass, trim, and selected onboard accessories, reducing the need to move repeatedly between helm and foredeck when anchoring or working the boat alone.
Broad compatibility and retrofit capability
The wireless system is compatible with Yamaha’s current Digital Electronic Control outboards from 150hp through to 450hp and supports single through to quint engine installations. Importantly for existing owners, it can be retrofitted to boats already running Helm Master EX, provided the system is updated to the latest software.
Built-in security protocols and automatic disengagement functions are designed to prevent unintended operation. The controller itself floats if dropped overboard and charges via an onboard cradle or USB-C, practical details that matter in daily use.
Integrated man overboard safety
A man overboard function is built into the system through wearable tags. If a tagged person falls overboard, the system can automatically slow the boat to idle or shut down the engines, depending on the situation. One captain’s tag and one passenger tag are supplied as standard, with support for up to eight tags to cover crew members or pets onboard.
On show in Auckland
The Helm Master EX Wireless Control System will be displayed at the Auckland Boat Show, running from 5–8 March at Jellicoe Harbour. Yamaha says the system will be fitted to a range of display boats, with limited sea trials available following the show.
