As fuel costs rise, interest has grown in boats that balance efficiency, speed, and comfort in New Zealand conditions. The Elliott 12m, a custom design by Greg Elliott, has been developed with exactly this brief in mind.
Havana, the first example launched, showcases the concept clearly, with a second hull already underway. Compact enough for a 12 metre berth yet offering the volume and performance of a larger vessel, the design challenges expectations of what is achievable in this size range.
Rather than chasing outright speed or styling trends, the Elliott 12m focuses on efficiency, balance, and predictable handling across varied conditions. Weighing just 7,500 kg thanks to composite construction, the lightly driven hull performs efficiently with modest power.
Careful alignment of the centre of gravity and centre of buoyancy allows the boat to remain level at displacement speeds, through planing transition, and at higher offshore velocities. The hull planes easily, runs flat, and avoids excessive bow rise or stern squat. A plumb bow extends waterline length, improving efficiency, ride comfort, and internal volume, while well-designed chines and planing strakes keep spray low and the ride dry.
Power comes from a 450 hp FPT N67 diesel paired with a ZF 280 gearbox, chosen to complement the hull’s efficiency. The result is economical long-range cruising at around 1–1.5 litres per nautical mile, with the ability to cruise comfortably at approximately 20 knots when required. Power delivery is smooth and progressive, offering strong mid-range performance suited to mixed coastal conditions.
A 1,000 litre fuel tank mounted across the hull’s centre of buoyancy minimises trim changes as fuel is used, maintaining a consistent running attitude. Inside, Havana features a bright, open saloon with excellent helm visibility. Accommodation includes a forward main berth, a portside double and bunk, and a separate head and shower to starboard.
The large cockpit and fold-down transom extend the living space aft, supporting fishing, entertaining, or relaxed time at anchor. Throughout, the emphasis is on practical, well proportioned spaces designed to be used.
As the first example of the design, Havana demonstrates that thoughtful design — not size or excess power — is key to creating a capable and efficient cruising boat. For owners seeking versatility without sacrificing comfort or performance, the Elliott 12m is a compelling option.
