The Makai 42 is now in New Zealand, and it’s a power catamaran built to do it all

Italian design, Croatian build quality, and a patented air-glide system that the manufacturer says reduces drag and smooths out the ride across a wide range of sea conditions. The Makai 42 is a newcomer to the 40-foot power catamaran segment, now available in New Zealand through F2 Marine.

Designed for long-range cruising without sacrificing comfort, the Makai 42 is the work of Italian designer Emanuele Rossi, built in Split, Croatia, and backed by a UK-based brand.

The headline feature is the patented air-glide system, which optimises aerodynamic lift to reduce drag and improve fuel economy. On the water, that means a smoother ride in chop and better range on a tank, both things that matter on a long passage or a serious day offshore.

The cockpit is where buyers will spend the most time making decisions. The aft deck can be configured for fishing, with rod holders, a bait prep station, and dedicated gear storage, or kept clean and social for entertaining. The boat is available in a sedan layout, a flybridge version for those who want the elevated helm and extra social space, and an optional tuna tower for committed sportfishers. Not many boats this size offer that breadth of choice.

Below deck, the open-plan layout connects the saloon to the cockpit through panoramic windows that keep the interior bright. Cabin configurations include a full-beam master suite for extended stays, with privacy and comfort that makes a week away genuinely appealing.

Power comes from twin Yanmar 8LV diesel engines as standard, rated at 370hp each. Higher-output options are available, and the Makai 42 can also be fitted with a combined Q-Speed surface drive and hydrofoil system that lifts top-end speed, improves fuel efficiency, and reportedly cuts maintenance by more than 35 percent compared to conventional propulsion.
