Blustery 2026 Zephyr 70th Anniversary Nationals

Written by

The 2026 Zephyr National Champs were held in March at Howick Sailing Club marking 70 years since Des Townson completed this popular design. Fifty-five sailors entered what was to unfold as a heavy weather regatta, with a day and a half lost due to wild conditions. Precontest favourites and former national champions Scott Leith, Mark Orams and Rod Dawson were true to form, separated by only six points with three races to go. The last two days were raced in 20-25 knot southerly winds with Rod Dawson rising to the occasion on the last day to take 2,1,1 and clinching the title.

This event highlighted the unique nature of Zephyr participation with ages ranging from mid 20s to mid 70s.

All compete on a relatively level playing field, each age band shining in their respective preferred conditions. The age of boats were also spread evenly, with the newest only a few years old and 1956 vintage #8 sailed by Giles Grigg scoring fourth overall.
