EcoFoul Magic: A potential game changer in marine antifouling

Written by

During the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain, the founder’s great-grandfather developed an improved method for fixing dyes to cotton cloth – a process later sold to a company that would become the chemicals giant ICI. It is perhaps no surprise that this legacy of practical innovation continues today.

With a naturally methodical and analytical approach, the founder of Eco Antifoul Systems Limited has spent several years developing a solution to one of boating’s most persistent challenges. As a longtime sailor and occasional liveaboard, he has firsthand experience of the ongoing battle to keep hulls clean, a challenge shared by boat owners worldwide.

This challenge has become more complex as environmental regulations tighten, and traditional biocide-based antifouling coatings are restricted. While more environmentally friendly alternatives exist, many are seen as less effective, highlighting a clear need for a solution that is both high-performing and environmentally responsible.

Eco Antifoul Systems Limited, a New Zealand-based company, has developed EcoFoul – an environmentally friendly antifouling formulation designed to reduce marine growth without toxic biocides.

EcoFoul has been tested extensively in real-world Northland marine environments, including:

  • Application to vessel hulls with direct comparison against conventional antifouling coatings
  • Deployment of test panels across multiple marina locations
  • Long-term immersion trials of up to 21 months
  • Testing across varied conditions, including differences in water temperature, salinity, current flow, and marine ecology

Testing has shown a consistent and significant reduction in marine growth compared to traditional antifouling systems.

Importantly, EcoFoul is non-toxic and suitable for aluminium hulls, addressing a key limitation of many conventional coatings.

The formulation remains confidential, with patents pending. It is understood that the product can be manufactured without complex processes and applied using standard marine coating carriers.
