Review of an unforgettable edition!

Manu Cousin’s arrival at the finish line on Sunday morning capped a race that redefined what IMOCA sailors thought possible in a single fortnight. After 13 days and 21 hours at sea, the Coup de Pouce skipper crossed at 0010 NZST on 23 June, bringing the third edition of the Vendée Arctique to a close. What unfolded between the start and that moment was a compressed masterclass in offshore racing: a route that had never been attempted at this latitude, conditions that ranged from violent to eerily calm, and a level of intensity that left every competitor changed.

Nine skippers ventured north of the Arctic Circle for the first time in an IMOCA race. The sheer audacity of the course registered with them all. “Personne n’était jamais monté autant au Nord dans une course,” Sam Goodchild of MACIF Santé Prévoyance said before the start. He and others spoke openly about their appetite for unconventional challenges, but the Arctic itself proved far more demanding than the anticipation. Once they crossed that invisible line into polar latitudes, they encountered what Francesca Clapcich described as a totally foreign environment, one that reminded Manu Cousin of the Southern Ocean’s mood and temperament.

The racing unfolded with remarkable drama. Goodchild was among the first to articulate what had become obvious to all nine competitors: this was a mini-Vendée Globe compressed into eight days. The parallels were uncanny. Cold water, permanent humidity, the necessity to balance speed against boat preservation, sudden shifts in wind and sea state—all of it mirrored the demands of a circumnavigation. Violette Dorange summed it up plainly: “On a tout connu en huit jours”—we experienced everything in a week. Wind, flat calm, heavy seas, frost. She believed it was the most intense race she had ever sailed.

Élodie Bonafous agreed. The sheer density of tactical decisions, the constant manoeuvres, the changing conditions left no margin for complacency. Arnaud Boissières called it a bold route that delivered an extraordinary voyage. Ambrogio Beccaria was simply relieved: “Now we can say we did it.” Cousin’s final hours to the finish line were watched closely, with the winning margin decided only in the closing stretch.

For these nine sailors, the Vendée Arctique has become more than a race result. Each one carries forward hard-won knowledge into the Vendée Globe 2028. They have proved that an IMOCA can function at extreme latitudes, that teams can manage unprecedented conditions, and that the ocean still holds routes waiting to be explored. The third edition delivered exactly what it promised: suspense, emotion, and a route that altered how at least nine sailors now imagine what is possible.
