SMARTDOCK, a smartphone-controlled docking and manoeuvring system for boats, makes its Australasian debut at the 2026 Sydney Boat Show, with Gineico Marine set to introduce it to the region.
The system lets a skipper control a boat’s engines and thrusters through an app on their phone, rather than from a fixed helm position. That means someone docking alone can move to the bow, stern, or anywhere else on board while continuing to operate the engines and thrusters, rather than relying on a second crew member to relay distances and fend off.
SMARTDOCK was developed by German manufacturer Thitronik GmbH. It’s intended for experienced skippers looking for an easier single-handed option, as well as newer owners who find close-quarters manoeuvring difficult.
The Engine Control Unit connects into a boat’s existing digital engine controls, converting commands sent from the phone into engine and gear signals. The Thruster Control Unit operates bow and stern thrusters with proportional control, meaning the skipper can vary thrust through the app rather than working with a simple on-off switch. Gineico’s material also lists anchor windlass control among the system’s features, an addition not detailed in Thitronik’s own technical documentation.
Compatibility covers MAN, Volvo, Yamaha, Mercruiser, Mercury and Dometic’s Optimus and Xenta throttle systems, along with thrusters from Sleipner, Quick, Maxpower and other major brands, with further compatibility being added over time. A broad compatibility list doesn’t mean every installation is straightforward, and individual engine controls, thruster models and vessel configuration will still need checking case by case.
Installation is described as plug and play. Gineico’s material indicates no separate handheld controller is required once the control units are fitted, with operation handled entirely through the smartphone app. The system continuously monitors the boat’s helm controls, so the skipper can resume conventional operation there at any time.
SMARTDOCK’s appearance at the Sydney Boat Show, running from 30 July to 2 August, marks its first showing in Australasia.
