In an impressive display of police vigilance, Counties Manukau South Police have recovered a stolen boat and returned it to its owner—before the theft was even discovered.
The boat, along with its trailer, was found at an address on Dominion Road, Tuakau, after authorities received a tip-off. Officers promptly attended the location and spoke to individuals present, soon realising the boat did not belong to anyone there.
A surprise call for the owner
Inspector Matt Hoyes, Area Prevention Manager for Counties Manukau South, explained that when officers checked the boat’s registration, it hadn’t been reported as stolen.
“Police phoned the registered owner, who initially believed the boat was still at his home in Hamilton. However, upon checking while on the phone, he discovered it was missing,” Inspector Hoyes said.
Police confirmed the boat had been taken from the owner’s property in Flagstaff, Hamilton, within the previous 24 hours.
Swift action pays off
Inspector Hoyes commended the rapid work of the team, saying, “It’s a fantastic outcome that we’ve been able to recover this boat and return it to its rightful owner so quickly. Police have zero tolerance for these types of crimes in our community and will continue to work hard to hold people to account for their actions.”
While the owner is undoubtedly relieved to have their boat back, the investigation is not over. Police are pursuing leads to identify the person responsible for the theft.
