Bumper Tugboat Fleet Race set to thrill at 185th Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta launch

Auckland’s 185th birthday celebrations on Monday, 27 January, will feature a spectacular tugboat race as part of the Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta. Currently, 17 tugboats are registered to compete, with more expected to join the line-up before race day.

This year’s regatta coincides with the opening of the six-week Moana Auckland festival, promising a vibrant programme of events for the thousands of spectators expected to gather along Auckland’s shores. The much-loved Tugboat Race will be among the highlights, captivating audiences with its unique blend of history and maritime spectacle.

“The Tugboat Race has been a crowd favourite since it debuted in 2007,” says Regatta Chairman Bill Lomas. “It’s a rare opportunity to see working and vintage tugboats race head-to-head. The combination of power and charm makes it as entertaining as it is impressive.”

One of the standout entries this year is the historic steam-powered tugboat William C. Daldy. Built in 1935, the tug was saved from the scrapheap and is now maintained by the William C. Daldy Preservation Society. After several years away from the race due to funding and volunteer shortages exacerbated by COVID-19, her return to the regatta has been warmly welcomed.

Skipper Keith Ingram describes the William C. Daldy as “Auckland’s tug,” noting its significance in the city’s history. Commissioned by the Auckland Harbour Board and named after one of Auckland’s founding fathers, the tug gained fame in 1958 when it held station against high winds for over 36 hours to protect a critical section of the Auckland Harbour Bridge during construction.

Another heritage gem joining the festivities is the classic yacht Ariki, which marks 120 years since its first regatta appearance in 1905. Owner Andrew Barnes highlights the uniqueness of Auckland’s maritime heritage, where centenarian yachts continue to sail in their birthplace, offering a rare glimpse into the city’s nautical past.

The regatta isn’t just about large vessels, though. Across Auckland, a variety of on-water events will take place, including dragon boat racing in the Viaduct Harbour, dinghy and foiling craft races at six citywide venues, radio-controlled yacht competitions, and – weather permitting – waka ama paddling.

This year’s regatta also serves as the opening event for Moana Auckland, New Zealand’s Ocean Festival, which runs from 27 January to 9 March 2025. Organised by Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, the festival celebrates Auckland’s deep maritime connections through events such as the Z World Manu Champs, Auckland Boat Show, PIC Harbour Classic, waterfront concerts, and family-friendly activities.
