Excess Catamarans has introduced a hybrid drive for the Excess 11, giving owners a quieter and cleaner way to get around without changing the boat’s sailing feel. The setup uses electric motors with modern battery management and regeneration under sail, trimming fuel burn while adding a useful layer of control in tight spaces.

On board, the difference shows straight away. You can ease out of an anchorage at dawn with barely a sound, line up for a berth with steady electric response, and rebuild charge while the sails are working. It suits the Excess 11’s lively hulls and keeps the fun of the platform intact without the rumble of a diesel.

For coastal families, weekend cruisers and liveaboard couples, the hybrid package adds a practical option that doesn’t complicate the boat. Range remains sensible, performance stays familiar, and day-to-day handling becomes noticeably smoother.

Boatgear (formerly Tenob)

The story of Boatgear is one of success, in fact one of the most successful in the New Zealand marine industry. It began back in 1973 when Ted Nobbs, and yes, that’s where the original company name, Tenob, name came from, began the business. At that time the company developed the Tenob rise & fall outboard bracket and now, nearly 50 years later, the range of outboard brackets has grown and is almost unchanged from the original. It is sold all around the world. However, that is just one...
