When Maritimo decided to bring 20 of its luxury motor yachts together at Man O’ War Bay on Waiheke Island in April, the forecast cooperated beautifully. Clear skies, 25-degree temperatures, and barely a ripple set the scene for what turned into a masterclass in how to run an owner event.
The fleet departed Auckland Harbour on Friday under ideal conditions, assembling beyond the heads for photos that captured the sheer presence of the Maritimo community in New Zealand. Most boats were recent builds, within the last five years, a striking visual that spoke to both brand confidence and owner loyalty. The two-hour cruise across the Hauraki Gulf was unhurried, allowing owners and guests to settle into the pace as they crossed toward Waiheke.
What made the anchorage work was the small detail of amphibious Sealegs vessels managing the tidal extremes of Man O’ War Bay. “Our owners really appreciated the unique capability of the Sealegs vessels, running them to and from their boats in shore conditions that would have been very tricky for conventional tenders,” Grant Binskin of Maritimo reflected.
The weekend struck a balance between structured activities and genuine freedom. Saturday saw one group slip across to Rotoroa Island, a conservation sanctuary east of Waiheke, where they encountered the rare Takahē bird, once thought extinct. Others simply swam, relaxed on deck, or explored the anchorage at their own pace. A casual barbecue brought everyone together without obligation, which proved central to the event’s success. “People were welcome to join us, or just enjoy their boat in their own way,” Binskin explained.
Saturday evening shifted gears entirely. Smart casual dress, champagne, and live acoustic music set the tone for a dinner featuring local produce. Garmin and MTU, partners in the event, contributed premium prizes including a high-end Quatix watch that drew genuine excitement from the room. The evening felt elegant without pretension, which seemed to be the entire point.
Sunday morning delivered 22 winners a ride on the Man O’ War zipline, soaring above the island before gliding down toward the bay. It was the kind of detail that turned a good boating weekend into one people would talk about for years.
