Strategic leadership to accelerate the future of sustainable marine technology
Vessev, a global leader in sustainable marine technology, has announced the appointment of John Scott as Chairman of the Board, bringing with him extensive industry expertise and a proven track record in marine innovation and business growth.
Scott, a seasoned leader in the marine sector, previously served as CEO of Invenco, a self-service payment technology company, and spent 14 years in executive roles at Navico, one of the world’s largest marine electronics companies. During his tenure at Navico, he played a key role in the company’s acquisition by Brunswick Corporation in 2021, a move that reshaped the marine technology landscape.
Scott’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for Vessev, as the company continues to push the boundaries of sustainable maritime transportation.
Vessev’s momentum accelerates with the VS—9 electric hydrofoil
The announcement follows Vessev’s recent milestone—the successful production and deployment of the VS—9 electric hydrofoil. Recently showcased with its full cabin and interior for the first time, the nine-metre VS—9 is a game-changer in sustainable marine transport, offering unparalleled efficiency, style, and passenger comfort.
Already in commercial service with Fullers360, New Zealand’s largest ferry operator, the VS—9 is designed to transport 10 passengers at a service speed of 25 knots, blending speed and sustainability with an experience described as being more like flying than boating. The hydrofoil technology reduces drag and energy consumption, making it a significant step forward in eco-friendly marine transportation.
Leadership to drive the next phase of growth
Vessev CEO Eric Laakmann expressed enthusiasm for Scott’s arrival, citing his extensive expertise across operations, design, supply chain, and technology development as key assets for the company’s next phase of growth.
“We are thrilled to welcome John as Chairman of the Board. He is a highly accomplished leader with a proven track record of building and scaling exceptional companies across all stages of growth. In the marine industry, John has played a pivotal role in multiple acquisitions and investment rounds, bringing a wealth of strategic insight. He joins Vessev at a defining moment, as our first product enters commercial service, and I have no doubt that his leadership will be instrumental in advancing our mission to propel a more liveable world.”
A vision for the future of marine innovation
Scott is equally optimistic about Vessev’s potential to revolutionise the industry, highlighting the company’s commitment to sustainability and cutting-edge technology as a defining factor in its trajectory.
“I’m excited to be joining the Vessev team and contributing in any way I can. The work this team is undertaking represents a paradigm shift for the entire marine industry—one that will, in time, become the norm. With physics on our side, success is simply a matter of overcoming technology hurdles, after which progress will follow naturally.”
A new era for sustainable marine transport
With Scott’s leadership and Vessev’s pioneering hydrofoil technology, the company is poised to accelerate its global impact in sustainable marine transport. The introduction of the VS—9 signals a new chapter for eco-friendly waterborne mobility, offering a cleaner, quieter, and more efficient future for ferry operators, tourism ventures, and private marine transport.
As Vessev continues to scale, New Zealand’s marine industry remains at the forefront of global innovation, proving that sustainability and performance can go hand in hand.
