Designed by Bill Upfold and brought to life by Allan Tongs Boatbuilders, this 43-foot motor launch is more than just a beautifully crafted vessel—it’s a boat that truly understands how Kiwis like to get out on the water. Whether you’re into fishing, diving, or simply cruising New Zealand’s stunning coastline, the Elite AT43 blends practicality with luxury in a way that feels effortless.

We had the pleasure of being shown through the Kōkako, the eighth hull of this stunning motor yacht at the Auckland Boat Show, by Ester and Nigel Tongs, the couple at the helm of Allan Tongs Boatbuilders. Their passion for what they do was clear from the moment we stepped aboard, and after spending some time exploring the AT43, it’s easy to see why this boat has become a quiet Kiwi success story.

A boatbuilding legacy

Before we even get into the boat itself, it’s worth talking about the team behind it.

Allan Tongs Boatbuilders has been crafting luxury motor yachts in Auckland since 1983. Originally led by Allan Tongs himself, the company has always had a reputation for meticulous craftsmanship, smart design, and a commitment to quality. When Allan retired in 2022, his son Nigel and wife Ester took over, ensuring the family legacy continued.

The team operates out of a purpose-built facility on Auckland’s North Shore, where specialist boatbuilders and marine cabinetmakers work on every AT43 with precision and care. Many of these craftsmen have backgrounds in high-profile builds—Volvo Ocean Race yachts, America’s Cup challengers—you name it. That’s the level of expertise going into this boat.

And right now, they’re exclusively focused on building the Elite AT43. That alone speaks volumes about the confidence they have in this design.

Designed for real Kiwi boating

Some boats feel like they were designed for a showroom, not for the real world. The Elite AT43 is the opposite.

This 43-footer isn’t just easy on the eye—it’s designed to work seamlessly in real Kiwi boating conditions. It’s small enough to slot neatly into a 13.5m or 14m berth, yet large enough to feel like a true motor yacht. The hand-laid GRP moulded hull is robust but lightweight, striking the perfect balance between strength and performance.

You can choose between a single Volvo D8 600hp engine or twin 440hp D6s—both solid options depending on whether you prioritise efficiency or a bit more punch. Either way, the boat delivers a smooth, confidence-inspiring ride, even when the conditions aren’t perfect.

One of the smartest touches? The silent chines. Anyone who’s spent a restless night at anchor listening to wave slap against the hull will appreciate this design feature—it keeps things whisper-quiet, even in a slight chop.

An entertainer’s dream—with a serious practical side

Step aboard, and the cockpit immediately stands out. It’s the kind of space that makes you want to stay out on the water for as long as possible.

There’s plenty of room to fish, dive, or just kick back and relax, and the layout flows beautifully. Whether you’re cooking up the day’s catch on the concealed BBQ station, rinsing off at the hot and cold transom shower, or setting up a bean bag with a cold drink in hand, everything feels effortless.

“The swim platform is fantastic—not only for fishing but also for lounging with a bean bag and a cold gin in hand.” Ester Tongs

Inside, the U-shaped galley connects beautifully to the cockpit dining area, thanks to a drop-down electric window that disappears with the push of a button. It’s a smart feature that makes entertaining a breeze, whether you’re serving up a meal or simply keeping conversation flowing between inside and out.

Unlike some boats that prioritise layout over liveability, the Elite AT43 gives you the best of both worlds

Storage is well thought out too—a full-size built-in fridge/freezer, a microwave, and a custom pull-out pantry keep everything tidy and within easy reach. The Hi-Macs solid surface benchtop is durable, stylish, and easy to clean—ideal for extended cruising.

Plenty of space to sleep in comfort

Unlike some boats that prioritise layout over liveability, the Elite AT43 gives you the best of both worlds.

The master cabin features a generous walkaround berth, and handily placed steps, meaning no awkward climbing in and out of bed. The guest cabin is smartly designed to switch between a double or twin singles, and there’s even a dedicated bunk room—perfect for kids or extra guests.

And it doesn’t end there—the Elite AT43 features a full-size shower and separate WC, bringing a residential level of comfort that’s often missing in mid-sized launches. A clever design touch? The bathroom door swings across the corridor leading to the master cabin, creating a private ensuite-style retreat by sectioning off the entire master suite, shower, and bathroom for added privacy.

“This isn’t a boat where you feel like you’re squeezing into a tight cabin. It’s got space, light, and smart design.” Ester Tongs

Self-sufficient and smartly powered

The Elite AT43 is designed to be self-sufficient, so you can stay out on the water longer without relying on a marina.

The AGM house battery system with solar charging eliminates the need for a generator, keeping things efficient and quiet. LED lighting, gas cooking, and other power-saving features help reduce energy use, and optional bow thrusters and autopilot make handling effortless.

A New Zealand success story

With Hull number 10 now in production, the Elite AT43 has carved out a solid place in the New Zealand boating market. Every single boat is pre-sold, with some buyers in the past waiting more than two years for their turn—a clear sign that this model has struck a chord with Kiwi boaters. As a rare occasion, there is a build slot starting in October this year. And it goes without saying, 10 hulls means the AT43 is one, if not the most, popular locally manufactured vessels in the mid-sized motor launch category.

The dining area is perfectly positioned near the galley, elevated to capture natural light and offer stunning views of your surroundings

The best part? Each build is refined and improved based on owner feedback, making every new AT43 just that little bit better.

“This is a boat designed for Kiwis, by Kiwis. It’s not a European or US import—it’s built for our conditions, our lifestyle, and our waters.” Ester Tongs

Final thoughts

If you’re looking for a motor launch that blends practicality with elegance, performance with comfort, and production efficiency with custom-level refinement, the Elite AT43 ticks every box.

It’s a boat that makes sense for how Kiwis actually use their boats—from the large, versatile cockpit to the beautifully considered interior. Add in Allan Tongs Boatbuilders’ impeccable craftsmanship, and it’s easy to see why this model has been such a success.

It’s stylish. It’s capable. And most importantly, it’s built by Kiwis, for Kiwis.

The Elite AT43 isn’t just a boat—it’s a true New Zealand success story.
