Ferry returns to Coromandel Town

After years without a direct link, Coromandel welcomes back a vital connection to Auckland.

Written by

The Auckland to Coromandel ferry is back on the water; and for locals, it’s more than a service; it’s a symbol of reconnection. After years of effort from the Coromandel Colville Business Association, the ferry has finally returned, docking once again at Hannafords Wharf near Coromandel Town.

The original service stopped during Covid, leaving a noticeable gap for both locals and visitors. For many Aucklanders, the trip across the Hauraki Gulf was the start of their Coromandel escape. The renewed route, operated by Explore Group, offers seasonal sailings from Labour Weekend through to April, giving travellers the chance to swap city skylines for native bush and golden beaches.

Association chair Jenny Ashman has led the charge to restore the service, backed by strong community support and help from Thames–Coromandel District Council’s economic development team. Their work has focused not only on transport but on what a revived ferry means for the local economy: from tourism to small business growth.

“This isn’t just about getting people here,” Ashman said at a recent public meeting. “It’s about creating opportunity while keeping Coromandel’s character intact.”

The project has already begun to pay off. Locals reported full boats and a festive mood on the inaugural sailing, with Mayor Peter Tregidga and community leaders aboard. It’s a promising start to what many hope will become a permanent fixture.
