New Zealand SailGP Team out for unspecified period after Auckland crash

The New Zealand SailGP Team, the Black Foils, have confirmed they will not compete at the KPMG Australia Sail Grand Prix in Sydney following the collision with DS Automobiles SailGP Team France during Race 3 of the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix in Auckland.

Speaking at a media briefing, co CEO Blair Tuke stated clearly: “Definitely out for Sydney.”

Beyond that, the timeline remains uncertain.

“Not yet. No, it’s too early,” Tuke said when asked about a return date. “As Pete mentioned, definitely out for Sydney. I’m just going to try and see from there.”

SailGP has confirmed that a formal review process is underway. Data, onboard systems and footage will be assessed as the league examines the circumstances surrounding the high speed incident.

Both Peter Burling and Blair Tuke declined to speculate on potential changes to fleet size, format or course setup, noting that those decisions sit with the league.

“This all needs to be reviewed, right? It’s a serious incident,” Tuke said. “But everyone involved in SailGP is prioritising the safety of the athletes.”

He added: “I’m confident that the due process will take place and changes, whatever they may be, will take place.”

Importantly, neither leader suggested the sport itself has fundamentally shifted in their view.

“We know where we’re putting ourselves and what the dangers can be or could entail,” Tuke said. “Of course it’s a significant incident… But no, I don’t think it changed anything from how we’ve approached the race.”

For now, the focus remains on recovery, review and preparation for a return once the league process is complete.
