Taylor Canfield put the U.S. SailGP Team on top in Race 2, winning on the Hudson River in front of a home crowd, with the BONDS Flying Roos second and Red Bull Italy third. NorthStar Canada crossed fourth after a penalty, Mubadala Brazil fifth, Emirates GBR sixth.
The start settled it. Canfield came in late from the bottom of the line, timed his acceleration through a gap in the fleet, and was foiling clear before anyone above him could respond. He led at Mark 1 and the U.S. team kept the race from there. At the penultimate gate they held a 120-metre buffer over NorthStar Canada. Australia closed hard on the final run, touching 70 kilometres per hour while the Americans sat at 54, but Canfield had enough water on the line.
Canfield said the tide was the dominant factor and that racing in yesterday’s reduced fleet gave them a read on it that paid off today.
Spain could not start. Hydraulic problems grounded Los Gallos before Race 2 got underway. With one race left they cannot reach the final.
GBR won Race 1 then dropped to sixth here, buried after a poor start.
