French sailor Violette Dorange proved something worth remembering in the 2024-25 Vendée Globe: at 22 years old, competing in her first circumnavigation, she could captivate a nation and finish. That combination of youth, competence and relentless determination now points toward the Vendée Arctique 2026, where she’ll pilot the IMOCA foiler Initiatives-Cœur on a daunting route from Les Sables d’Olonne to the Arctic Circle and back.
For New Zealand sailors accustomed to the Southern Ocean’s testing conditions, Dorange’s trajectory reads as exceptionally clean. She sailed Optimists across the English Channel and through the Strait of Gibraltar as a teenager, then progressed through the Mini Transat class and three editions of the Solitaire du Figaro. Her 10th place finish in the 2022 Solitaire caught attention among the IMOCA community; her Vendée Globe debut turned her into a phenomenon. That maiden circumnavigation—the kind that humbles most offshore sailors—confirmed what French sailing observers already knew: Dorange belongs among the sport’s next generation of serious operators.
The Initiatives-Cœur project distinguishes her from pure racing competitors. Built by Black Pepper Yachts in 2022 and designed by Sam Manuard, the boat carries more purpose than a racing rating. Each campaign raises funds for Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque, which provides heart surgery for children in developing countries. Over 500 have undergone operations through the initiative. Race followers can contribute through social media engagement; sponsors link donations to every new page follower. It’s fundraising woven into the fabric of competition rather than bolted on afterward.
The Arctic race demands different calculations than the southern latitudes where Dorange cut her offshore teeth. Cold, pack ice, extended daylight and compressed racing windows require patience as much as boat handling skill. For a sailor in her early twenties who’s already finished a Vendée Globe, the Arctique offers something rarer than another trophy—a chance to test whether her emerging mastery across one ocean translates when the horizon changes entirely.
