Regular maintenance and routine checks can prevent many of these problems. Craig Maile, First Mate with BoatSmart HQ on Queensland’s Gold Coast, shares some simple preventative maintenance tips to keep your boat in good condition and avoid unexpected repairs.
Engines and generators
Check oil, coolant, and gearbox fluid levels. Clean engine strainers and check belts for wear. Keep the bilge clean to spot leaks easily.
Hydraulics
Regularly check hydraulic fluid levels, seals, and hose ends for leaks. Check the quality of anodes in the steering heat exchanger.
Shaft seals
Inspect shaft seals during predeparture checks while the engine is running. If water ingress is found, address it immediately. Most systems come with a spare seal in the casing, so remember to replace the used spare after installation. Check the cutlass bearing for play.
Rudders
Regularly check rudder seals for leaks. Perform a bump test when the vessel is out of the water to check for play. If there is play it is best to have the rudder realigned and checked by a marine professional.
Anodes
Check both internal and external anodes at least once a year to prevent corrosion of crucial components.

Electrics
Ensure electrical systems are properly grounded to prevent stray currents that can damage metal parts. If you notice your anodes are wearing out faster than usual, this is likely the problem and should be addressed quickly to avoid costly damage.
Battery health
Clean battery terminals and check fluid levels where applicable. Replace batteries showing signs of corrosion, swelling, or performance drop.
Anchor servicing
Inspect anchors and connections monthly for corrosion. A product like Lectra Shield can help prevent corrosion of the terminals. Grease anchor winch fittings every three months and service annually.
Antifoul
Choose the right antifoul based on your boat type and usage. Check and reapply coatings if you notice increased marine growth or reduced performance.
Detailing
Regularly detail your boat to prevent long-term damage from salt water, UV rays, and environmental elements. A monthly detailing plan that includes wash downs, waxing, teak treatment, and metal polishing helps prevent this wear, keeping your boat looking sharp and preserving its value. BNZ
